Maiden daughter makes history

WHEN your dad's a member of one of the country's biggest rock bands, making your own name in the music biz is perhaps a little easier.

But it also means there are plenty of critics out there.

Lauren Harris, daughter of Iron Maiden bass guitarist Steve, takes a step out of her Leytonstone-born dad's shadow tonight (Wed) when her debut single makes history.

Your Turn will be the first single to be released in 2009, when it is made available for digital download one second into New Year's Day.

It is the first time ever a single has been time activated worldwide so it can be released across each of the different time zones as they hit 00:00:01!

Lauren, 24, who lives near Harlow, Essex, said: "It's very exciting and it'll be interesting to see what impact releasing the song like this has."

Her music has been described as hard rock and power pop. She cites Heart, Def Leppard and Aerosmith as influences and says she grew up listening to "old school stuff of my dad's - Golden Earring, Bad Company...".

Rock magazine said of Lauren: "She has the lungpower and poise to roam the heartland of American rock radio."

Music was all she was interested in as a child. "I sang all through school and then I started playing gigs in pubs.

"That's when Russ Ballard's friend saw me and asked me to make a demo.

"My dad didn't know anything about it, but when I told him, he was really impressed."

Lauren and her band toured extensively in 2006 including appearances at the Download Festival at Donington and Dublin, and the German Rock im Park and Rock am Ring festivals.

They supported Iron Maiden on European and world tours.

Lauren said: "I'm sure it's been easier because of who my dad is. He's opened doors for me and has always been very supportive. He watches from the side of the stage and gives me advice at the end of the gigs."

Does she get nervous, playing in front of all those Maiden fans?

"The best part about the business is playing live. I always get butterflies, but I love being out there on stage."

Her first album, Calm Before the Storm, was released by Demolition Records in June.
