some big names will thrill crowds at next year's festival,

THE spectacle of 18,000 French people roaring their approval at the sight of a Union Jack and joyfully celebrating the best of British may seem unlikely.
But another 18,000 will be doing exactly the same the next night – it is summer in Paris and we’re watching Iron Maiden, one of the UK’s most successful exports.
The Heavy Metal pioneers may have started off playing pubs in east London back in the Seventies but more than 1.5million fans had seen this epic world tour by the time it finished in Moscow.
“We’ve never been as big as we are now,” said singer Bruce Dickinson, above, “it’s quite amazing.”
Maiden, with more than 70million record sales under their belts so far, show no sign of slowing down.
The Somewhere Back In Time tour, as the name suggests, was a greatest hits show focusing on their Eighties output.
Over two hours, classic rock anthems like Run To The Hills, The Trooper, Aces, High and The Number Of The Beast poured out of the huge PA system in rapid succession.
As the band ran wild on the Egyptian-themed stage skeletal zombie mascot Eddie emerged from a huge sarcophagus at the back, sparks streaming from his eyes.
It was spectacular and the French fans went nuts – especially young ones.
Bruce said: “Most of the new audience probably got into the band around eight or nine years ago. A kid who was 14 when he bought that album is now 22 or 23.
“So he’s bought the last three albums and then discovered the legacy records, which he’s never heard us play live.
“So this show for him is amazing. It’s like Led Zeppelin getting back together once a week and saying ‘You know what? We WILL do Stairway To Heaven.’
“And that excitement comes across. Young fans make for great audiences.”
Maiden are a very British institution and a truly global phenomenon – and their iron-lunged frontman is just as extraordinary.
Bruce’s CV reads like a Boy’s Own wish list. Not only a rock star, he’s also an airline pilot – a captain with charter airline Astraeus, he flies his band, road crew and equipment round the world on a customised Boeing 757 called Ed Force One.
He’s also a former international fencer, a film-maker (writing the screenplay for 2008 supernatural chiller Chemical Wedding), a radio DJ.
“It’s my bucket list, things to do before you die!” laughed Bruce.
“But life is not a rehearsal and you have to take every opportunity.”
While their 2008 shows celebrated the past, Maiden are very much focused on the future.
“This isn’t a farewell tour or anything like it,” said Bruce. “This is another stepping stone and I think the band can get even bigger, a LOT bigger.”
DEF LEPPARD's PHIL COLLEN Talks About Turning Down IRON MAIDEN Audition
DEF LEPPARD's PHIL COLLEN Talks About Turning Down IRON MAIDEN Audition - Nov. 3, 2008
Cameron Edney of Inside Out webzine recently conducted an interview with DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Inside Out: "Songs From The Sparkle Lounge" sounds like mixture of classic DEF LEPPARD as well as the bands most recent work, how did you push each other musically and creatively to get the best results possible for the new album?
Collen: We didn't, really. It was like doing four separate projects, and everybody came in with different songs. With this record we didn't do too much co-writing, I would come in with something; Joe [Elliott] came in with something, even Vivian [Campbell] and [Rick] Savage and we literally did three songs from each person, well four in my case! It really saved a lot of pressure and was a lot easier process.
Inside Out: When it came time to record "Songs from the Sparkle Lounge", did you approach it in a different way to some of the albums you have recorded in the past?
Collen: Vivian and I play very well together, the timing is just bang-on, and if you put a pair of head phones on and listen to us live we are really in synch. The only thing that we wanted to do for a while is work on some of the songs together. We have been trying to push for that for a few years now, it just hasn't happened; we normally work on pieces separately. With this record, me and Vivian done a lot of the rhythm guitar parts together in the same room and it really helps, it gives it that identity, if you like. I think it's something to look forward to for the future. I think we should work on it for a few songs to do live. That was certainly one of the main differences.
Inside Out: Tell us about your brush with IRON MAIDEN, I believe that if Adrian Smith never joined the band, you were next in line for the job!
Collen: They asked me to come down and I wasn't really interested. I have known them guys for years. I used to go to school with the original singer Paul Di'Anno, who I have known since I was six. All the guys grew up in the same area as me, they're lovely guys, I love 'em, but it's a different type of music. I was in a glam rock band and now I'm in DEF LEPPARD… which is more up my street."
